UK public collections feature 279 examples of his work. His well known enthusiastic and long term collectors included David Bowie and Damien Hirst. In 2003 Damien Hirst praised Bellany as "one of the major painters of the twentieth century." John Bellany was awarded a CBE (1994) and honorary degrees from the Universities of Edinburgh (1996) and Heriot-Watt (1998). Note 2: Collector demand has never been higher for the work of John Bellany and numerous examples have been sold in recent months by both McTear's and others at ever more impressive prices. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 29th May 2022 "The Finnon Smoker" by Bellany sold for £80,000 (hammer) and in the same sale, "Bass Rock Fable" (a 76 x 61cm unframed oil) sold for £12,000 (hammer). In our 21st August 2022 auction, lot 137 "The Newspaper Hat" (a 61 x 51cm oil) sold for £9500 (hammer). "Like-for-like" auction prices for original paintings are usually difficult to assess, but in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of April 2023, two Bellany paintings which had been acquired in our auctions in September and November 2014 were consigned for sale by the same owner. The original 2014 selling prices were £1800 and £4000 and the same paintings sold in April for £3800 and £7000 (all hammer prices). This equates to a growth in value of 86.2% in fewer than nine years. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 25th May 2023, lot 282, "Restless Wave" a 90 x 90cm oil (by Bellany) sold for £9000 (hammer) and in our auction of 9th November, lot 92 (2023), "Harbour" a 90 x 120cm oil by Bellany sold for £11000 (hammer). The postage stamp showed an industrial worker and a blast furnace, celebrating James Watt's invention of steam power. It is one of Howson's most iconic and best known subjects. Note 2: Peter Howson OBE has established a formidable reputation as one of his generation's leading figurative painters. Many of his paintings derive inspiration from the streets of Glasgow, where he was brought up. He is renowned for his penetrating insight into the human condition, and his heroic portrayals of the mighty and meek. His art is described by Robert Heller as "founded in humanity, especially the human face." Howson was born in London. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1975-1977, returning in 1979 to complete a Master's. In 1985 he was made the Artist in Residence at the University of St Andrews and also a part-time tutor at Glasgow School of Art. In 1992 he was commissioned by the Imperial War Museum to record the conflict in the former Yugoslavia . He was appointed official British war artist for Bosnia in 1993 and in 1996 was awarded Doctor of Letters Honoras Causa, University of Strathclyde. Prior to converting to Christianity in 2000, Howson responded to pain by pursuing hedonism. His experiences of abuse - whether self-inflicted and substance-related or the traumatic events of his childhood - have afforded him an affinity with those individuals who are classed as somehow 'on the edge'. His work has caught the attention of a number of prominent cultural figures, celebrities and creatives as well as striking a chord with prisoners, a voiceless demographic from whom Howson receives many letters of support. His ability to speak to the peripheries - to both the exclusive echelons living 'the highlife' and the socially alienated outsiders labelled 'low lives' - is proof of his enduring skill at capturing the maverick, excessive and non-conformist, while also seeking spiritual change. In 2011 Howson completed a dramatic rendering of the martyrdom of St John Ogilvie for the renovated St Andrew's Cathedral in Glasgow. The two year process of working on the commission was the subject of a BBC documentary. In 2023 Howson was the subject of a major retrospective at the Edinburgh City Art Centre, When the Apple Ripens: Peter Howson at 65, a comprehensive overview of the artist's career. Lady Mackay was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Inchcape, chairman of the shipping line P&O who also ran Inchape PLC and was director of many other companies. Lucy Mackay was educated in Switzerland, Cambridge and at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art, 1960–5, under David Talbot Rice and William Gillies, graduating with a master’s honours degree in fine art. In 1973–4 she completed a postgraduate illustration studies year at the Central School of Art and Design. She settled in Edinburgh where she studied advanced botanic illustration at the Royal Botanic Garden, and where as a member of the Scottish Arts Club from 1983 she regularly attended life studies. Mackay began her extensive teaching career in 1966 as art assistant at Edinburgh Academy for Boys; from 1968–76 taught art, design and pottery at schools in the London area; then again in Edinburgh at the Salisbury Centre, 1981–2. In 1999 she joined the register of Angus County’s artists-in-residence for primary schools, serving at several schools. After winning first prize in a portrait painting competition run by the magazine Nursery World, 1953, and exhibiting a prize painting in the Daily Mail competition to celebrate the opening of the Forth Road Bridge, 1964, Mackay took part in many group shows, including the RSA. Among later solo exhibitions were The Italian Institute, Edinburgh, 1991; Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh, 1995, 1998 and 2005; and The Forum, Ocean Terminal, Leith, in aid of the Bethany Trust, 2004. She travelled extensively in several continents with paints and sketch-book. As well as a series of self-portraits Mackay completed many portraits, including Ronald Fletcher, broadcaster, 1968; the Queen’s Counsel Lionel Daiches, 1979–80; singer Ian Caddy, 1980–1; Professor David Daiches with his brother Lionel, 1988–9; the composer and conductor Emre Araci, 1997; and cellist Harriet Johnson, 2000. Her work is held by collections including the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; London College of Music; Royal Over-Seas League; Scottish Arts Club; Barlinnie Prison; and Geffrye Museum.

The original 2014 selling prices were £1800 and £4000 and the same paintings sold in April for £3800 and £7000 (all hammer prices). This equates to a growth in value of 86.2% in fewer than nine years. British sculptor, printmaker, collagist, ceramicist, film-maker, designer, and writer, the son of Italian immigrant parents. His output was large and highly varied (in terms of style as well as technique), but he is remembered mainly for his early involvement with Pop art and for the large public sculptures he produced in his later years. He had his first one-man exhibition as a sculptor in 1947 and in the same year he began making collages, using cuttings from advertisements, American magazines, etc. (I was a Rich Man's Plaything, 1947, Tate, London). Paolozzi regarded these collages as ‘ready-made metaphors’ representing the popular dreams of the masses, and they have been seen as forerunners of Pop art (he eventually amassed a large collection of pulp literature, art, and artefacts, which he presented to the University of St Andrews). In 1947–50 he lived in Paris, where he was influenced by the legacy of Dada and Surrealism, and in the early 1950s he was a member of the Independent Group, the nursery of British Pop art. His sculpture moved freely between figuration and abstraction and made use of many different materials. During the 1950s it was characteristically heavy and bulky, often incorporating industrial components, showing his interest in technology as well as in popular culture. In the 1960s it became more colourful, including large totem-like figures made up from casts of pieces of machinery and often brightly painted. In the 1970s he made solemn machine-like forms and also box-like low reliefs, both small and large, in wood or bronze, sometimes made to hang on the wall, compartmented and filled with small carved items. By this time he was regarded as one of the major artists of the day and he received numerous public commissions. These included mosaic decorations for Tottenham Court Road underground station in London (installed 1983–5) and several large bronze sculptures, including Newton (1995) in the piazza in front of the British Library, London. Paolozzi was knighted in 1989 and was awarded many other honours. He taught at various art schools and universities in Britain, Europe, and the USA, but his obituary in The Times commented that ‘his gruff manner and combative personality ultimately worked to the detriment of his teaching career’. Six hundred and eighty of his works are held in UK public collections.
