Reilly was born in Huddersfield where he studied at the Batley School of Art & Design (1976 ?77), going on to Sheffield Polytechnic of Art and Design (1977- 80) and graduating with a first class honours degree in Fine Art. Joseph?s work has featured in many group and solo shows in his native north of England ? Sheffield, Huddersfield and Manchester, but also in London at the Piccadilly Gallery. Working in oils and acrylics O?Reilly has specialised in exquisite still life painting for 25 years. He is fascinated by what is beyond the outward appearance of the objects in a still life, where there is often a deeper significance ? a symbolism of inference that may be of a philosophical, intellectual religious or purely personal nature. O? Reilly has a wonderful feeling for light and the play of light and shadows to create a particular mood. Joseph is interested in contrasts of subject matter and textures, he says:? I might, for example make a painting of a leather jacket and some flowers. The jacket takes on the shape of my body after a time, while the flowers are delicate and ephemeral.? The play of light and shadows is another important element in respect of modelling and defining forms. In some recent paintings Joseph has explored the way light falls across white drapery as a backdrop or in conjunction with the objects creating exciting sculptural effects. After National Service (1947 to 1949), when he qualified as an instructor in the Royal Artillery Signals Training regiment, he studied at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) from 1949 to 1953, where he was taught by William Gillies, and then won a travelling scholarship to Italy, with fellow student, John Houston. David originally lectured at Gray?s School of Art in Aberdeen. He returned to ECA to teach in 1961 and retired almost 30 years later, in 1990, as Head of School of Drawing and Painting, having served as Vice Principal from 1974-1977 and being made a Professor in 1988. In 1979, David was Visiting Artist at the University of the Arts in Belgrade. In 1991, he went to the University of California at Santa Barbara as Visiting Professor. He was awarded an OBE in the New Year of 1997. He received an Honorary Fellowship from ECA in 2009 ?in recognition of [his] outstanding contribution to the life of the College and the education of its students?. David Michie's drawings, prints and paintings explore two major themes. Firstly, the diversity of nature, particularly seen through studies of birds, plants and insects from his wide-ranging travels. He recorded his observations in many sketchbooks, gathering a lifetime of visual data. He was also very much drawn to the more colourful, absurd, eccentric, and humorous sides of human behaviour, such as performance, theatre and people at play. David was a long-time enthusiast of French Cinema, enjoying the diverse work of directors from Pagnol to Jaques Tati. A prolific artist, David had many solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London and throughout the UK, as well as further afield in the USA and across Europe. He was recognised early as an exceptional talent, winning the first prize at the annual student show at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1983. He then won a travel award which took him to Paris, Amsterdam, Belgium and Cyprus. He won the Guthrie Award at the RSA in 1985 and was given Scottish Arts Council Awards in 1985, 1988 and 1989. He has exhibited irregularly but notably at The Traverse Theatre in 1982 and with the 369 Gallery throughout the following decade. In the 1990s he was already visiting "Seagreens" (his current home) and staying at a cottage at Benholm, two miles to the North also frequented by Alberto Morocco and Ian Eadie. Cook travelled regularly in these years to Turkey, the Balearics and significantly, at the invitation of the Everard Reed Gallery, to Southern Africa for three months in 1997. He was able to secure the tenancy at Seagreens shortly after his return and eventually bought it in 2004. Joan Eardley worked at Catterline, just eleven miles to the north of Seagreens and like Eardley sixty years earlier, David Cook feels the emotional draw of the sea and the wildness of the coastal environment. This sense of belonging is now deeply embedded; he can see the seasons change and paint the whole calendar; the daffodils of Spring, wild flowers of Summer, the Autumn skies and bleak drama of Winter are all on show: immediate, raw and compelling. David Cook is represented by The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) and his most recent solo show there was "Forged by the Sea" 29th June - 22nd July 2023. His known public collections include: The City of Edinburgh Council, Dundee Art Gallery & Museums, Dunfermline District Museum, Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Kirkcaldy Museum & Gallery, Knysna Fine Art (South Africa), The Scottish Arts Council, University of Dundee, University of Warwick, Art in Healthcare and in corporate collections in the UK. Apollinaire famously first coined the term ?Surrealism? and, in its most moderated definition, this may be appropriate to the sensibility of Scott?s work?. Apollinaire was a confidant of Picasso and the Spanish master famously took the Harlequin as his subject in the period 1904 and thereafter. In the book by Ray McKenzie and Tom Normand on Michael Scott?s life and work titled ?Testament?, it is written: ? It was in Ovid that Scott found many of the source tales for his classical subjects and in Apollinaire that he discovered the non-linear, capricious and whimsical aesthetic that informed his oeuvre?. The poem by Apollinaire ?Acrobats? is thought to be the inspiration for "Clowns" together with ?The Circus 1995 and The Travelling Players 2002?. A version of "Clowns" features as a full page photograph on page 99 of the book, "Michael Scott, Testament" published in 2010. " Note 2: Born in Aberdeenshire in 1946, Michael Scott (Mike Scott) studied Political Science at Liverpool before doing a one year's teacher training course in Huddersfield. After moving to Glasgow, Scott took a full-time research post at Glasgow University followed by a lecturing post at the re-named Glasgow Caledonian University. John Lowrie Morrison was born in Glasgow in 1948 and studied at Glasgow School of Art (1967-71). In 2005 John established 'The Jolomo Foundation', a charitable body aimed at promoting and encouraging painting the Scottish landscape. John donates a percentage of his sales and art works to charity each year. He holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the West of Scotland and an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Abertay Dundee University, for 'A Significant Contribution to Scottish Culture'. John was awarded an OBE in 2011 for 'Services to Art and Charity in Scotland'. The following year, he and his wife Maureen were invited by HRH The Princess Royal to become Vice Presidents of Carers Trust. In 2013 over 20,000 people visited his major retrospective exhibition at Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery. John was awarded the 'Great London Scot Award' for Lifetime Achievement in 2017 and in 2018 was invited to luncheon at Buckingham Palace by HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip. At the age of thirteen, she came to Scotland where she schooled at Bearsden Academy. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in the seventies. "My main inspiration as an artist is in the Scottish landscape and seascape. I enjoy using colour to define contours, structure and changing light sequences. I search out specific viewpoints. I am equally inspired by the rugged isolation of the Western Isles and the dramatic viewpoints of the Eastern coastline. I work predominantly in oil". Pam Carter was unquestionably one of Scotland's most popular and successful contemporary artists. She won numerous awards and prizes, always received significant media attention, has been the subject of many magazine features and had several tv appearances. Her work is widely exhibited but relatively rarely appears at auction. However, in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 17th April 2022 lot 38 "Luskentyre Reflections" a 46 x 51cm oil by Pam Carter sold for œ2000 (hammer) and in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 10th July 2022 lot 230 "Gables Geary" sold for œ2600 (hammer). More recently, in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 24th October 2024, lot 47 "West Coast Sunset" (61 x 61cm oil on canvas) by Pam Carter sold for œ3600 (hammer). Furthermore, two Pam Carter oil paintings were sold at an auction house in England in March 2025 achieving hammer prices of œ3000 and œ3800. These and several other auction results reflect the broad appeal and growing interest (and values) of Pam's work. Comment: Pam was a special artist and one who enjoyed wide popularity and substantial commercial success. In all our dealings with Pam over the years, she was always generous with her time and quick to provide the background to paintings we had received from private consignors and filling in gaps about locations, dates etc. Pam's work is instantly recognisable and she had that rare gift, even among the best artists, of being able to use the minimum of brushwork to create the maximum visual effect. Her "lines" were those of the natural environment but she knew exactly how to "see" them and portray them on canvas. Despite her commercial success, or perhaps even because of it, Pam's work probably hasn't yet reached the full audience that it so richly deserves. She exhibited frequently at numerous galleries in Scotland and gallery owners were inevitably in a queue to secure her work. Typically, Pam showed loyalty to those who were the first to support her when she was a relative unknown. Talented artists always wish to be remembered by their work and Pam Carter can be certain of that, but she'll also be remembered with great affection by all those who had the good fortune to meet her or know her.

Many of his paintings derive inspiration from the streets of Glasgow, where he was brought up. He is renowned for his penetrating insight into the human condition, and his heroic portrayals of the mighty and meek. His art is described by Robert Heller as "founded in humanity, especially the human face." Howson was born in London. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1975-1977, returning in 1979 to complete a Master's. In 1985 he was made the Artist in Residence at the University of St Andrews and also a part-time tutor at Glasgow School of Art. In 1992 he was commissioned by the Imperial War Museum to record the conflict in the former Yugoslavia . He was appointed official British war artist for Bosnia in 1993 and in 1996 was awarded Doctor of Letters Honoras Causa, University of Strathclyde. His entire family, including his grandfather, and everybody he knew, were in shipbuilding. He was always passionate about boats. He believed he was very lucky. "I was in the right place at the right time. I caught the tail-end of the Clydeside shipbuilding boom in the 1950s. Shipyards had full order-books and the river teemed with craft of every sort. So I always had a subject?. His paintings are in a formidable array of collections ? including those of HM The Queen and Prince Philip, The Princess Royal, The Arts Council, The Hunterian, Glasgow Museums, Paisley Museum & Art Gallery, IBM, Britoil, the Danish Embassy, Yarrow Shipbuilders, McKean Museum and Art Gallery, Clyde Shipping Co, the Royal Bank of Scotland and also the town council in the Faroes. Watt went to Glasgow School of Art for four years where he was taught by Ted Odling, Douglas Percy Bliss, and David Donaldson. In 1958 he was one of 13 founders of the Glasgow Group, an artists' co-operative which continues to this day. Irritated by the conformist, unadventurous policies of local exhibiting societies like the Royal Scottish Academy and the RGI, and at the dearth of commercial outlets in the city, they got together with other GSA students and graduates to exhibit at Glasgow?s then-beautiful McLellan Galleries. The Glasgow Group was the Transmission Gallery of its day. After two years National Service in the army, from 1955 to 1957 he became an art teacher, and a much-beloved one at that. He was noted for his kindness and good counsel, and one former student says of him: "I had pretty much zero talent but he sparked a lifelong love and interest in art." Another remembered ?His was the fastest-moving Volvo down the school drive. He was some man." Later Watt became a member of the RGI and was elected a member of Society of Scottish Artists in 1965. In 1997 he received The Royal Bank of Scotland Award at the Glasgow Institute. He dedicated much of his life to recording the River Clyde and its industries, and his vast body of work forms a vital archive of the river. Greenock's McLean Museum and Art Gallery exhibition, The Lost Clyde: The Paintings of James Watt, was mounted to celebrate his 90th birthday. James was also the father of Alison Watt OBE FRSE RSA, one of Britain's best-known painters.

Self-taught, although studied arts as part of degree as an Architect. Exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute, Paisley Art Institute and Aspect Prize Annual exhibitions. Represented by established galleries at the Art Fairs in London, Battersea, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Chelsea, Birmingham, Aberdeen, Ireland etc, and self-represented at the Oxford international Art fair February 2016 and the Aberdeen Art Fair, September 2016. I have works in private and corporate collections throughout the UK, Australia, USA, Greece, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Russia. There were a number of articles in local and national press concerning my work and images had appeared in the TV Channel 4's Grand Design. Works exhibited in established galleries throughout the UK. My style-quirky witty figurative, somewhat humorous, somewhat realistic but always colourful. Growing up under the authoritarian Soviet regime, when ordinary Russians had to wear that drab look of obedience and self-suppression, I had always wanted to escape from that total uniformity and find the way to express my vision of events reflecting happier, lighter take on everyday life. We busy ourselves with tedious tasks that like it or not, need to be done, and forget to simply be happy. I reflect everyday events in a slightly exaggerated way to take off the heaviness and seriousness, there is plenty of both in real life-and I believe in surrounding yourself with things that make you feel better. The important thing after all is to be happy and not to be important. My subjects are loosely based on own experiences and observations - and are therefore recognisable, which often provokes a laugh (much desired effect). My subjects (although at times seemingly emotionally isolated, even when they are clustered in groups) are not lacking emotions, they only express them in their own way. They do not take themselves too seriously, they just go about their business as if no-one is looking. Their self-sufficiency is their freedom... Sometimes my characters might look quite realistic and recognisable, but their grotesque figures make them look ironic-we see one thing but they tell us another. Like many things in life-things are not always the way they seem. In other words, I try to reflect life as we see it but don't always notice. To finish, I'll quote: "Artist must think when he feels and feel when he thinks". At first, these two statements are mutually exclusive. If an artwork is created without this in mind, the end result will inevitably lack the energy and that "something" that makes us want to look at a work of art. How to combine the two? This is something that cannot be taught but is inborn. Russians are guided by their emotions, not by common sense, and this has an effect on all my work (whether I am paying myself a compliment here, I am not sure...). I'm interested in people and interactions between them, what makes us tick, what makes us human. British painter, draughtsman, printmaker, photographer, designer, and writer, active mainly in the USA. After a brilliant prize-winning career as a student at the Royal College of Art, Hockney had achieved considerable success by the time he was in his mid-twenties, and he has since consolidated his position as by far the best-known and most critically acclaimed British artist of his generation. His phenomenal success has been based not only on his flair and versatility as an artist, but also on his colourful and engaging personality, which has made him a recognizable figure even to people not particularly interested in art. In 1961 he emerged as one of the leaders of British Pop art at the Young Contemporaries exhibition. Hockney himself disliked the label ?Pop?, but his work of this time makes many references to popular culture (notably in the use of graffiti-like lettering) and is often jokey in mood. His first retrospective exhibition came as early as 1970, at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (it subsequently toured to Hanover, Rotterdam, and Belgrade). By this time he was painting in a weightier, more traditionally representational manner, in which he did a series of large double-portraits of friends, including the well-known Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy (1970?1, Tate, London). These portraits are notable for their airy feeling of space and light and the subtle flattening and simplification of forms, as well as for the sense of stylish living they capture. Hockney often paints the people and places he knows best (his art is frequently autobiographical) and has memorably celebrated his romance with Los Angeles (he first visited the city in 1963 and settled there in 1978), particularly in his many paintings featuring swimming pools (A Bigger Splash, 1967, Tate, London). In these works he skilfully exploited the qualities of the new acrylic paint. Hockney has also been outstanding as a graphic artist: his work in this field includes etched illustrations to Cavafy's Poems (1967) and Six Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm (1969), as well as many individual prints, often on homoerotic themes. In the 1970s he also came to the fore as a stage designer, notably with his set and costume designs for Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress and Mozart's The Magic Flute, produced at Glyndebourne in 1975 and 1978 respectively. The broader style demanded by stage design has been reflected in his subsequent easel paintings. In the 1980s he experimented a good deal with photography, producing, for example, photographic collages, in which numerous prints are made into a composite patchwork image. Subsequently, he has also produced paintings in a similar vein, using canvases arranged in a grid to create a huge overall image: the largest is Bigger Trees Near Warter (2007, Tate), painted in the open air near his Yorkshire studio, which is made up of 50 canvases in a rectangle measuring about 4.5 m (15 ft) by 12 m (40 ft). Hockney is a stimulating commentator on art and has published several books on his own life and work, as well as Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters (2001), in which he controversially argues that the use of optical aids such as the camera lucida and camera obscura has been much more common in European art than previously thought.

oil on board, signed, titled verso unframed overall size 62cm x 97cm Handwritten artist's label verso Note: Hilda Goldwag was born into a Jewish family in Vienna, Austria on 28 April 1912. Her father, Moses, also an artist, died when she was nine. Goldwag attended Anna Schantruch?s Art Classes for gifted artistic children and, at the age of 14, helped paint murals for the new St Leitener Kindergarten. She graduated from the Graphiscme Staatslemtr und Versuchs Anmalt, Vienna with special commendation in 1938, but following the Anschluss (annexation of Austria) in March 1938, subsquently managed to secure a permit allowing her to travel to Scotland in March 1939. Her family was due to follow her six months later, but World War II was declared the day they received their travel permits, causing them to be trapped in Austria. In 1942, during The Holocaust, they all were murdered in concentration camps: her mother at Treblinka and her brother, sister, brother-in-law and nephew at MalyTrostenets. Her sadness at the loss of family members can be felt in much of Goldwag's art. In Glasgow in 1940 Goldwag met fellow refugee and lifelong friend Cecile Schwarzchild, and both undertook war work as turners at McGlashlan's engineering works. Post-war Goldwag became head designer at Friedlanders in Hillington, designing scarves for Marks & Spencer (1945-55). She also worked as a freelance illustrator for Collins Publishers, and later, as a part-time occupational therapist at Forresthall Hospital (1962-75). She resumed painting and exhibiting in the 1950s, working principally with oils and a palette knife, mostly outdoors and in situ, carrying both paintings and materials with her on the local buses. Her subjects included the nearby Forth and Clyde Canal, the tenements and warehouses of Cowcaddens, and, from the 1980s, exuberant flower pieces, panoramic farm landscapes, waterscapes, and ?imagined? figure paintings. Although most of her work was done in the Glasgow area, she did travel on holiday to Italy, Holland and the islands of Scotland. Her paintings are usually large and dramatic. It is amazing that Hilda was able to see any happiness in her views of her world. Others would have been blighted by the traumas she experienced. She exhibited in Gourock, Greenock and at the Lillie Art Gallery, and received awards from the Glasgow Society of Women Artists. She was also a professional and exhibiting member of the Scottish Society of Women Artists, the Paisley Art Club and the Milngavie Art Club. In 2005, an exhibition of her work was held at the Collins Gallery, Glasgow. She died in Glasgow, Scotland on 28 January 2008. Thirteen of her works are held in UK public collections including Strathclyde University, The Ben Uri Collection (London) and the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre. "...deeply embedded in the European tradition and, coming from the city of Klimt, Schiele, Freud and Wittgenstein, as an outsider in Glasgow, she documents a city moving from the old to the new. As well as people, she paints buildings, townscapes as designs, old tenements giving way to the modern".

A concluding comment on Pat Douthwaite?s 1993 solo exhibition, made by The Scotsman?s art critic Edward Gage. The ?maverick? label is often attached to Douthwaite to encompass a variety of the artist?s more striking traits: her troubled personality, the restless, nomadic lifestyle that took her across the world in search of subjects and meaning and her complete disregard for anything that did not further the development of her artwork, despite it making her a difficult figure to manage and work with. A good example is an incident in which she broke into a house and stole back one of her paintings from a buyer whom she did not consider worthy of owning her work. This demanding, uncompromising commitment and all-encompassing focus on her work paid off. She developed and sustained a distinctive, signature style characterised by raw feeling and idiosyncratic lines. Douthwaite was fascinated by historical heroines including Greek deities, Mary Queen of Scots and the aviator Amy Johnson and often depicted them as well as herself. Her images of women remain the most powerful and popular of her works, truly encapsulating the pain and suffering women can experience and endure. This exploration of suffering means there is a violence in the work, yet Douthwaite often manages to retain fun, playful touches in their execution. Born in Glasgow in 1934, Douthwaite?s first exposure to creative expression was in the form of dance classes at the dancing school run by Margaret Morris, the bohemian partner of the Scottish Colourist John Duncan Fergusson. She eventually discontinued dancing and decided, aged twenty-four and with no artistic training, to become a painter. Douthwaite showed her work to Fergusson, who recognised her talent and encouraged her endeavours, though he suggested she avoid art school, as he had done. Thus, both Morris and Fergusson had a major impact on Douthwaite?s creative endeavours. Douthwaite?s ever-present wanderlust quickly took over and she left Glasgow to join an artistic community within William Crozier?s house in East Anglia. An informal artistic training in itself, she was surrounded by fellow artists including Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Crozier himself. In her lifetime, her work was recognised and championed by key figures in the Scottish art world; including Richard Demarco, who mounted her first major exhibition in Scotland in 1967; Douglas Hall, the former Director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the artist and critic Edward Gage. Following her death, her popularity continues to increase as ever more collectors are drawn to her distinctive, expressive style and tales of her mysterious, maverick personality. The prestigious Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) have long promoted Pat Douthwaite's work and her most recent solo show "Pat Douthwaite, On The Edge" was staged by the gallery between 4th and 27th February 2021.
