Note: Peter Howson OBE has established a formidable reputation as one of his generation's leading figurative painters. Many of his paintings derive inspiration from the streets of Glasgow, where he was brought up. He is renowned for his penetrating insight into the human condition, and his heroic portrayals of the mighty and meek. His art is described by Robert Heller as "founded in humanity, especially the human face." Howson was born in London. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1975-1977, returning in 1979 to complete a Master's. In 1985 he was made the Artist in Residence at the University of St Andrews and also a part-time tutor at Glasgow School of Art. In 1992 he was commissioned by the Imperial War Museum to record the conflict in the former Yugoslavia . He was appointed official British war artist for Bosnia in 1993 and in 1996 was awarded Doctor of Letters Honoras Causa, University of Strathclyde. Prior to converting to Christianity in 2000, Howson responded to pain by pursuing hedonism. His experiences of abuse - whether self-inflicted and substance-related or the traumatic events of his childhood - have afforded him an affinity with those individuals who are classed as somehow 'on the edge'. His work has caught the attention of a number of prominent cultural figures, celebrities and creatives as well as striking a chord with prisoners, a voiceless demographic from whom Howson receives many letters of support. His ability to speak to the peripheries - to both the exclusive echelons living 'the highlife' and the socially alienated outsiders labelled 'low lives' - is proof of his enduring skill at capturing the maverick, excessive and non-conformist, while also seeking spiritual change. In 2011 Howson completed a dramatic rendering of the martyrdom of St John Ogilvie for the renovated St Andrew's Cathedral in Glasgow. The two year process of working on the commission was the subject of a BBC documentary. In 2023 Howson was the subject of a major retrospective at the Edinburgh City Art Centre, When the Apple Ripens: Peter Howson at 65, a comprehensive overview of the artist's career. His work has been shown in major exhibitions globally including Eye on Europe at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and The Naked Portrait at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 2007. Her father, landscape artist George Whitton Johnstone RSA (1849?1901), encouraged her artistic talents, and at the age of 16 she enrolled as a student at the Edinburgh College of Art. She took the Life Class with Ernest Stephen Lumsden where she revealed her talents at informal portraiture, a genre for which she became well known. In 1914 she became a member of staff at the Edinburgh College of Art. From the summer of 1915, she became a regular annual visitor to Kirkcudbright in Galloway, where she would paint with other mainly female artists including Jessie Marion King as part of the Kirkcudbright School. Dorothy Johnstone, with her close friends Cecile Walton and Mary Newbery, was a member of The Edinburgh School, which reformed in 1919, a collective of gifted and progressive artists associated with the Edinburgh College of Art. During 1919 she was living in Kirkcudbright where she had an affair with Vera Holme who would go on to be the 'Pankhursts' chauffeur'. In 1924, at the peak of her artistic career, Johnstone mounted a joint exhibition in Edinburgh with fellow artist Cecile Walton. She married her colleague and fellow group member David MacBeth Sutherland in 1924. They had a son, Sir Iain Sutherland, in 1925, and a daughter in 1928. As a consequence of her husband's appointment in 1933 as Head of Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen (now at Robert Gordon's University) and of the "marriage bar" in place at the time, she gave up her career and her students. She kept her links with Edinburgh by continuing to exhibit her portraits and landscapes at the Royal Scottish Academy to which she was elected an Associate (ARSA) in 1962. Johnstone painted landscapes and portraits, particularly of children, and her style was free and relaxed, whether using oil, watercolour, pencil or chalk. Some of her work is displayed at the National Gallery of Scotland. When she died in 1980, she bequeathed her important early painting 'Marguerites' (painted in 1912) to the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1983 Aberdeen Art Gallery gave her a major memorial show which toured, then in 1987 Bourne Fine Art (now The Fine Art Society) in Edinburgh and London staged a joint exhibition of the works of Dorothy Johnstone and her husband David MacBeth Sutherland.

John Bellany was awarded a CBE (1994) and honorary degrees from the Universities of Edinburgh (1996) and Heriot-Watt (1998). Note 2: Collector demand has never been higher for the work of John Bellany and numerous examples have been sold in recent months by both McTear's and others at ever more impressive prices. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 29th May 2022 "The Finnon Smoker" by Bellany sold for œ80,000 (hammer) and in the same sale, "Bass Rock Fable" (a 76 x 61cm unframed oil) sold for œ12,000 (hammer). In our 21st August 2022 auction, lot 137 "The Newspaper Hat" (a 61 x 51cm oil) sold for œ9500 (hammer). "Like-for-like" auction prices for original paintings are usually difficult to assess, but in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of April 2023, two Bellany paintings which had been acquired in our auctions in September and November 2014 were consigned for sale by the same owner. The original 2014 selling prices were œ1800 and œ4000 and the same paintings sold in April for œ3800 and œ7000 (all hammer prices). This equates to a growth in value of 86.2% in fewer than nine years. He was recognised early as an exceptional talent, winning the first prize at the annual student show at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1983. He then won a travel award which took him to Paris, Amsterdam, Belgium and Cyprus. He won the Guthrie Award at the RSA in 1985 and was given Scottish Arts Council Awards in 1985, 1988 and 1989. He has exhibited irregularly but notably at The Traverse Theatre in 1982 and with the 369 Gallery throughout the following decade. In the 1990s he was already visiting "Seagreens" (his current home) and staying at a cottage at Benholm, two miles to the North also frequented by Alberto Morocco and Ian Eadie. Cook travelled regularly in these years to Turkey, the Balearics and significantly, at the invitation of the Everard Reed Gallery, to Southern Africa for three months in 1997. He was able to secure the tenancy at Seagreens shortly after his return and eventually bought it in 2004. Joan Eardley worked at Catterline, just eleven miles to the north of Seagreens and like Eardley sixty years earlier, David Cook feels the emotional draw of the sea and the wildness of the coastal environment. This sense of belonging is now deeply embedded; he can see the seasons change and paint the whole calendar; the daffodils of Spring, wild flowers of Summer, the Autumn skies and bleak drama of Winter are all on show: immediate, raw and compelling. David Cook is represented by The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) and his most recent solo show there was "Forged by the Sea" 29th June - 22nd July 2023. His known public collections include: The City of Edinburgh Council, Dundee Art Gallery & Museums, Dunfermline District Museum, Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Kirkcaldy Museum & Gallery, Knysna Fine Art (South Africa), The Scottish Arts Council, University of Dundee, University of Warwick, Art in Healthcare and in corporate collections in the UK.

Many of his paintings derive inspiration from the streets of Glasgow, where he was brought up. He is renowned for his penetrating insight into the human condition, and his heroic portrayals of the mighty and meek. His art is described by Robert Heller as "founded in humanity, especially the human face." Howson was born in London. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1975-1977, returning in 1979 to complete a Master's. In 1985 he was made the Artist in Residence at the University of St Andrews and also a part-time tutor at Glasgow School of Art. In 1992 he was commissioned by the Imperial War Museum to record the conflict in the former Yugoslavia . He was appointed official British war artist for Bosnia in 1993 and in 1996 was awarded Doctor of Letters Honoras Causa, University of Strathclyde. Prior to converting to Christianity in 2000, Howson responded to pain by pursuing hedonism. His experiences of abuse - whether self-inflicted and substance-related or the traumatic events of his childhood - have afforded him an affinity with those individuals who are classed as somehow 'on the edge'. His work has caught the attention of a number of prominent cultural figures, celebrities and creatives as well as striking a chord with prisoners, a voiceless demographic from whom Howson receives many letters of support. His ability to speak to the peripheries - to both the exclusive echelons living 'the highlife' and the socially alienated outsiders labelled 'low lives' - is proof of his enduring skill at capturing the maverick, excessive and non-conformist, while also seeking spiritual change. In 2011 Howson completed a dramatic rendering of the martyrdom of St John Ogilvie for the renovated St Andrew's Cathedral in Glasgow. The two year process of working on the commission was the subject of a BBC documentary. In 2023 Howson was the subject of a major retrospective at the Edinburgh City Art Centre, When the Apple Ripens: Peter Howson at 65, a comprehensive overview of the artist's career. His work has been shown in major exhibitions globally including Eye on Europe at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and The Naked Portrait at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 2007. The family returned to Glasgow in 1926 where Bill attended Glasgow Academy, and in 1932, entered Glasgow School of Art. On graduating in 1935, he was awarded the Haldane Travelling Scholarship and set off to Paris, where he gained admission to the studio of Fernand Leger and was able to study under the master; Crosbie described his time there as "one of my proudest experiences". When his scholarship ended Bill was offered a job with the Archaeological Institute expedition to the newly excavated Temple of the Bulls and Temple of Sakkara in Egypt, where he copied the friezes on the temple walls. In 1939 Bill returned to Glasgow where he set up his studio at 12 Ruskin Lane, a studio originally designed for Sir David Cameron. During the war he served in the Merchant Navy, though he continued to produce paintings through these years. He was also at the centre of what he once described as a "little local Renaissance" which included luminaries such as Hugh MacDairmid, J.D. Fergusson, James Bridie, T.J. Honeyman and Basil Spence. Other "regulars" at his studio were the refugee artists Jankel Adler and Josef Herman, as well as Duncan Macrae (whose portrait by Crosbie is now hanging in the People's Palace). After the war Bill made his London debut at the Reid and Lefevre Gallery in 1946 in a joint exhibition with the English surrealist painter John Armstrong. An important part of Crosbie's work after the war were his mural paintings, largely commissioned through his association with architects like Basil Spence and Jack Coia. These included works for the "Britain Can Make It? exhibition in 1946 and the "Festival of Britain" in 1951: there were also many murals and altarpieces for churches of all denominations. He was involved in book illustrations for the publisher William MacLellan and even designed the set of a ballet for George Chisholm. There were major retrospective exhibitions of Crosbie's work at Aitken Dott's in 1980, Ewan Mundy's 1990 and Perth Museum and Art Gallery 1990. His paintings hang in all the major museums and galleries in Scotland as well as the Royal Collection and the British Museum in London and in private collections throughout the United Kingdom and abroad. William Crosbie's own words are perhaps his best epitaph: "Devotion to the muse and the life it has led me has meant I have enjoyed a richness of texture not readily to hand to the majority of my fellow citizens". He exhibited on a regular basis with the Annan Gallery in Glasgow from the war until the 1970s and in Edinburgh with Aitken Dott's. From the 1980s he showed with Ewan Mundy in Glasgow. Academic recognition came in 1953 with his election as an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy and subsequently as an Academician. In Glasgow he was a proud member of, and annual exhibitor at, the Glasgow Art Club. One of the finest and most singular Scottish painters of the twentieth century.

The beautiful beach at Luskentyre has been voted "Britain's Best Beach" and is accessed by a single track road. There is a vast area of sand dunes on the north side of the bay. Note: John Bellany was known to be working on "Scottish Fish Gutter" at the same time as "Allegory 1964" (Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art). "The Fish Gutter" might well have been started at around the same time but the Open Eye Gallery label dates it to 1966. The figure depicted in "The Fish Gutter" is understood to be an actual fish gutter from Port Seton who was a member of a small religious sect. The irony that a messianic and self-righteous believer could at the same time slaughter and gut fish so mercilessly would not have been lost on Bellany. There is the added significance that in Christian iconography the fish is a symbol of Christ. It is well documented that Bellany exclusively used hardboard until 1969. ''In 1969 Bellany painted his second triptych Homage to John Knox. It brought together the principal themes in his work at the time and was heavily influenced by Max Beckmann's painting "Departure". This was (almost) the last time Bellany painted on hardboard. He now began painting on canvas, which he found frustrating for the first six months until he got used to the 'tooth' of the surface. The change altered his technique. His use of glazes and meticulous handling were replaced by a more modern and overtly expressionist style''. This change defines two very significant periods in Bellany's work. Early pre 1970 work on board and his later body of work, on canvas. John Bellany's early work is highly prized by collectors and their appearances at auction are ever rarer. Because many of his early works were on a monumental scale, much of it is simply too large for private collectors and furthermore many of the early larger paintings are now held in public collections. It is extraordinary to contemplate that Bellany was only in his early twenties when he painted these exceptional works about which London Standard art critic Brian Sewell later commented ".... in the 1960s (Bellany) painted such pictures as to make us think him as a painter with Rembrandt". In 1963 and 1965 Bellany and Sandy Moffatt staged "protest" exhibitions of their work during the Edinburgh Festival, first on the railings in Castle Terrace and then on The Mound steps (beside the Royal Scottish Academy). The Bellany/Moffat outdoor exhibitions were a watershed for Scottish art in two ways: they proved that it existed, and they showed the way for a radical new direction. The works included "Allegory", later acquired by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, "The Gospel Spreaders" "The Finnon Smoker (1965)" (sold McTear's Sept 2022 for œ80,000 hammer) and only a few other stunning tableaux, now mostly in public collections. "We were rebellious characters," remembers Moffat. "That was the period when our generation did make a stand. There was very little representation of Scottish art at the festival ... (we thought] if we can't get in the official festival, we'll put it into the streets. Scottish art didn't really exist. It existed in the studios of Edinburgh College of Art, but it didn't exist in the arts establishment, which was completely Anglicised, I believe. There has been an enormous sea-change. It's almost impossible to measure, but I think we had a hand in the beginning of that, the turn of the tide." It meant Port Seton, it meant fishermen, it meant working people ? that had never been painted before. People had painted fishing boats, but nobody had ever painted about the life of people who did the fishing. That was John's fantastic contribution. "His place in Scottish art is defined by the Port Seton thing. That's really his life's work, the way he has mythologised the life of the fisherman. The fears, the spirit, the whole thing, the way he found the special imagery, that had never been done before, to say all those things ? that puts him into the history books forever." Keith Hartley, senior curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, agrees. "What he was doing in the mid-1960s in many ways changed the course of Scottish painting. It was like a manifesto: I don't want to do paintings for Edinburgh drawing rooms, I want to do something which moves people, about ordinary people's lives. It was very much a protest." Two hundred and seventy-nine of John Bellany's artworks are held in UK public collections. His work is also held by The Museum of Modern Art, New York (MOMA), the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut. David Bowie was an enthusiastic collector (and become a close friend) from a relatively early age and owned multiple examples including "Fishermen in the Snow, 1965" (sold David Bowie Collection September 2016, Sotheby's for œ85,000 hammer).
