oil on canvas, signed framed image size 75cm x 62cm, overall size 98cm x 84cm Provenance: From the estate of the late Edward Marnier, Morrison, McChlery and Co Auctioneers. May 1953, Lot 75 where purchased by J.M. Ross and then by decent. Note: Born in Beith, Ayrshire on September 25 1886, James Hendry received his medical education at Glasgow University, graduating in 1910. Having chosen to specialise in midwifery, he began extensive postgraduate study on the continent. He returned to Glasgow in 1913 and received an appointment with the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, a hospital with which he was to remain associated throughout his life. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, he was a Captain in the University Contingent of the O.T.C. and from 1916-1918 served in France with the Royal Army Medical Corps, retiring with the rank of Major. He held various appointments within the city of Glasgow including the post of Gynaecological Surgeon to the Royal Infirmary and Medical Director of the Royal Maternity Hospital. He devoted much of his time to committee work and was an original member of the Council of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in addition to his involvement with the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust and the Goodenough Committee. In 1927 he was appointed to the Muirhead Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a position which he held for 15 years. From 1937 onwards he was a member of the University Court of the University of Glasgow. From1943 till the time of his death, he held the Regius Chair of Midwifery at Glasgow University. He died of Lung cancer in 1945. Although the author of several published works, he was best known as a teacher of some distinction.
